![]() In an intimate address to the viewer, Attenborough calls this his “witness statement” detailing the world’s devastating biodiversity loss at the hands of humanity, along with his vision for the future. In contrast, “ A Life On Our Planet” is an explicit call to action never quite expressed before in his documentaries. Perhaps in the hopes it would still spark enough concern in its viewers to become more environmentally conscious. However, quintessential series like “ Planet Earth” continued to tread carefully around “politicising” the topic and stuck largely to the expected content of traditional programming. In the Photo: David Attenborough pictured in nature documentary “One Planet.” Photo Credit: Netflix It would be difficult – if not impossible – to avoid addressing these issues in wildlife programs where the consequences can be so palpably witnessed. His iconic nature documentaries have increasingly touched on the issue of declining biodiversity and the impact of climate change on the natural world. It is clear from the start that this is both a personal love letter for the world he grew up in and a stark warning of how – as a society – we have squandered this gift.Ī household name synonymous with wildlife documentaries, Attenborough has always championed conservationist causes. Now, at 93, Attenborough is taking the opportunity to reflect on the changes that have occurred over the span of his lifetime. Over the course of his 60-year career as a naturalist and beloved wildlife narrator, the landscape of the natural world has changed dramatically. ![]() Now, he’s borne witness to the “story of global decline during a single lifetime” and proposed a better future: It’s up to everyone else to figure out how to get there.David Attenborough graces our screens again in his most poignant documentary yet. At 94, Attenborough has made dozens of films and connected people around the world to bizarre forms of wildlife that they could only dream of. In another, bison roam under the blades of gigantic wind turbines.Īttenborough doesn’t really have a plan to get us to this eco-utopia, where the world population has leveled out, countries are run on solar, wind, and geothermal, and many, if not most, of us are vegetarian. In one particularly wild shot, drones lift timber from a mist-covered rainforest, carrying them over the trees to a shimmering city on the horizon which bears a passing resemblance to Black Panther‘s fictional land of Wakanda. The documentary zooms from hopeful images of the present - glittering solar fields in the Moroccan desert and quiet, lush hydroponic farms in the Netherlands - to speculative visions of the future. ![]() Those forests and plains and seas were already emptying.” “Although as a young man I thought I was out there in the wild, experiencing the untouched natural world,” Attenborough says in the film, “it was an illusion. Attenborough has been here, watching the disaster unfold, the entire time. Today, however, the world’s population has more than tripled, wilderness has shrunk to a paltry 35 percent, and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has shot through the roof. In 1937, when Attenborough was 11 years old, just 2.3 billion people lived on the planet and 66 percent of the world’s wilderness remained. But as successive generations are born, that baseline shifts downward - eroding understanding of what “normal” really is.Īttenborough’s new film is peppered with grim reminders of how much the world has changed over the course of its narrator’s life. Pauly fired off a quick commentary in an ecology journal, arguing that any given generation of fishers experience the fish stocks of their childhood or early career as “normal,” setting a “baseline” that shapes their reaction to later losses. One fisherman might remember his nets teeming with bluefin tuna, while his grandson has never seen a single one. Pauly was frustrated by the inability of humans to comprehend the rapid loss of aquatic life. ![]() Who better to document the decline of wilderness than a nonagenarian who has chronicled nature for 70 years?Ī Life on Our Planet is the perfect antidote for “shifting baseline syndrome,” a phrase coined in 1995 by Daniel Pauly, a fisheries scientist living in the Philippines at the time. A teenager today wouldn’t remember what the world looked like before half of the world’s animal populations disappeared - or for that matter, what it’s like to live in a stable climate. The footage is a reminder of how Attenborough’s age has become one of his greatest assets. So I think he should give up this loop it is too old-fashioned. Pierre Henry and Schaeffer himself, they found some sounds, like say the sounds of a casserole, they made a loop, and then they transposed this loop. His work has noise loops: he likes loops, a loop effect, like in musique concrète, where I worked in 1952. Then there’s another one: Daniel Pemberton. But I think he should learn from the art of transformation, so that what you find sounds completely new, as I sometimes say, like an apple on the moon. There are found objects – a lot like he finds with his scanner, you see. He has a good sense of atmosphere, but he is too repetitive again. But I think he should transform more what he finds. He is very experimental, because he is searching in a realm of sound which is not usually used for music. The other is Robin Rimbaud, Scanner, I’ve heard, with radio noises. So he should be very careful and separate as soon as possible from the belief in this kind of public. I know that he wants to have a special effect in dancing bars, or wherever it is, on the public who like to dream away with such repetitions, but he should be very careful, because the public will sell him out immediately for something else, if a new kind of musical drug is on the market. It starts with 30 or 40 – I don’t know, I haven’t counted them – fifths in parallel, always the same perfect fifths, you see, changing from one to the next, and then comes in hundreds of repetitions of one small section of an African rhythm: duh-duh-dum, etc, and I think it would be helpful if he listened to Cycle for percussion, which is only a 15 minute long piece of mine for a percussionist.īut there he will have a hell to understand the rhythms, and I think he will get a taste for very interesting non-metric and non-periodic rhythms. Because he would then immediately stop with all these post-African repetitions, and he would look for changing tempi and changing rhythms, and he would not allow to repeat any rhythm if it were varied to some extent and if it did not have a direction in its sequence of variations. I heard the piece Aphex Twin of Richard James carefully: I think it would be very helpful if he listens to my work Song Of The Youth, which is electronic music, and a young boy’s voice singing with himself. In addition to Stockhausen’s general reactions to the state of art in edgier electronica, he had comments on the specific artists and their work. ![]() That would be terrible: that is selling out the music. One shouldn’t do that: music is the product of the highest human intelligence, and of the best senses, the listening senses and of imagination and intuition.Īnd as soon as it becomes just a means for ambiance, as we say, environment, or for being used for certain purposes, then music becomes a whore, and one should not allow that really one should not serve any existing demands or in particular not commercial values. I don’t like psychology whatsoever: using music like a drug is stupid. I think musicians should have very concise figures and not rely on this fashionable psychology. It is like someone who is stuttering all the time, and can’t get words out of his mouth. I wish those musicians would not allow themselves any repetitions, and would go faster in developing their ideas or their findings, because I don’t appreciate at all this permanent repetitive language. Stockhausen had these music tips for the artists: While his comments are a few years old, they’re worth reading for his perspective. ![]() Mr.Vaulin & Svet Feat.Back in 1995, classical composer and electronic music pioneer Karlheinz Stockhausen (22 August 1928 – 5 December 2007) took the time to give a listen to some then-current tracks by Aphex Twin, Plasticman, Scanner and Daniel Pemberton. We’ve previously discussed the improvements and new features we’re making to Clans and Groups coming to StarCraft II with Patch 2.1. I hate the way that breasts work in the game, but there were so many other features that I should be able to look past that. I was always looking at her back and the only time that the ridiculous chest physics reared its ugly head again was when I was talking to NPCs whose chest would bounce even if the character themselves hadn’t moved. Once I was in the game, things seemed a lot more simple since I didn’t have to look at my character from the front. Try to imagine, if you can, moving your character’s image around and her breasts look like they’re doing the wave. Strike one, ArcheAge. Even more strange, her breasts would move independent of each other. Even turning my character so I could get a side view of them would have her breasts bouncing like she’d just done a hundred jumping jacks while not wearing a bra. ![]() It’s not that they’re the enormous melons held on with a teensy bit of tape that you can find in some games, but they jiggle like Jello on a spoon. If you’re going to play a woman in ArcheAge, the first thing that you’re going to notice is the boobs. I was driven out of WoW by the toxic behavior toward women ( like Kit was), and have been whispered sexually explicit comments in many other MMOs. Even in Pico, which is an adorable game where everyone is a little chibi person, there were people making sexually explicit or homophobic comments in the chats. I always like to start with a character who is a woman since it will (sadly) give me a better idea of just how bad the game and/or community can be. With the game boasting this many features, I was dying to like it.īut like most MMOs that I’ve tried more recently, ArcheAge tripped over the first hurdle when I was on the character creation screen. We could farm, build combat, go on trade missions where we were trading our own goods, have a ship and go on navel missions, or even have epic naval battles where we tried to sink enemy ships. ![]() We wouldn’t spend 30+ hours waiting for any other game to get good, so why should we slog through an MMO? First impressions are incredibly important and the mechanics even more so when it comes to MMOs, since that’s what you’re going to be doing over and over again.ĪrcheAge sounded like it was revolutionary and full of fresh game ideas that would make it my new favorite MMO. While I’ve been told by some of my friends that I have to be willing to put in the time for an MMO to get good, I don’t see why it should have to be that way. I never got far enough in the game to see it. With your house built, you could grow crops and build trade goods that would actually feel more rewarding than clicking a button to craft a piece of gear that you would ultimately just sell to a vendor.īasically, from what I read, it sounded like a cross between WoW, Clash of Clans, Grand Theft Auto (medieval fantasy edition), and FarmVille. I just had to see how they were going to pull this off. ![]() When I first found out about ArcheAge, I was really excited. From what I understood before playing, ArcheAge was a very sandbox-y kind of MMO, which allowed us to have a truly player-driven economy where you could go out questing and fight monsters for loot, or buy a plot of land to build your house on. When these moods hit, I definitely don’t want to go back to World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2-they just aren’t cutting it, so I go looking for some free-to-play MMOs. I go through these periods where I’m desperately looking for MMOs to play. ![]() ![]() ![]() Writing library : libebml v1.3.6 + libmatroska v1.4.9 / Lavf58.20.100įormat/Info : High Efficiency Video Codingįormat profile : Main ID : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC Writing application : mkvmerge v29.0.0 ('Like It Or Not') 64-bit The first Overlord series took anime fans on an enjoyable ride back in 2015 as we followed Ainz Ooal Gown on his quest to conquer the world.Episodes 3 & 6 had no japanese audio, that has been corrected. A few years on, fans were pleasantly surprised to see two seasons follow each other in quick succession as Overlord II and III both came out in 2018. We even got to see the cast of Overlord interact with other franchises in 2019’s comedy-orientated Isekai Quartet. ![]() Overlord II was, in my opinion, a bit of a mixed bag, dedicating multiple episodes to world-building as we followed lizard men, maids and more. The content wasn’t bad per se – it simply didn’t do much for me each week overall. Overlord III, however, felt like a stronger season overall and it was fun to revisit it for this review. Whereas Overlord II kicked off with some recap, III assumes that you watched the previous season and instead gives viewers a laid-back opener that allocates some screen time to the supporting characters and helps define those that live within the Tomb of Nazarick. The story this season again follows more than one narrative as we spend time in Carne Village where Battle Maid Lupusregina is tasked by Ainz to spy on the villagers and protect three of them, including Lizzie who appeared previously in the first season. They are concocting a new kind of healing potion that could prove useful to the kingdom and especially Ainz’s plans of conquest. Unlike the episodes spent with the Lizard people in II, this subplot feels a bit more connected to the overarching plot and new characters like Enri Emmot and Nfirea Bareare, alongside the goblins who have made a home in the village, are fairly likeable.Įlsewhere, a group of workers being paid by a rich noble are tasked with exploring the Tomb of Nazarick, seeking out any potential treasures and goods that lie within. ![]() ![]() Deep brain stimulators appear to unfetter an otherwise intact voluntary motor control system from the aberrant activity of one or more nuclei of the basal ganglia in patients with Parkinson’s disease or dystonia, whereas cochlear implants bypass a dysfunctional organ of Corti to activate an intact vestibulocochlear nerve to re-instate audition. Medical devices seek to restore lost function and leverage remaining, intact aspects of the patient’s physiology. Non-invasive techniques under development include transcranial magnetic or direct current stimulation, and biofeedback delivered from quantitative electroencephalography (EEG) or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Other types of neurotechnology devices improve health by modulating pre-existing systems: deep brain stimulators, for example, deliver targeted electrical stimulation to the basal ganglia to relieve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Sensory devices inject signals into the nervous system, while motor prosthetics extract signals from the nervous system and send them to control devices such as robotic arms or stimulators to re-activate paralyzed muscles. Cochlear implants have restored hearing to thousands of people, while devices to restore sight and movement are progressing rapidly. While non-invasive approaches might strengthen a patient’s remaining intact cognitive abilities, neurocognitive prosthetics comprised of direct brain–computer interfaces could in theory physically reconstitute and augment the substrate of cognition itself.Ī range of medical devices to restore or augment human functions are becoming available with the swift engineering and biomedical advances in the new field of neurotechnology. In order to paint a vision for future device development, it is essential to first review what can be achieved using behavioral and external modulatory techniques. Like their neuromotor counterparts, neurocognitive prostheses might sense or modulate neural function in a non-invasive manner or by means of implanted electrodes. Recent findings about the neurophysiology of these conditions in humans coupled with progress in engineering devices to treat refractory neurological conditions imply that the time has arrived to consider the design and evaluation of a new class of devices. No medical devices are currently available to help restore these cognitive functions. ![]() Executive planning, the ability to direct and sustain attention, language and several types of memory may be compromised by conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, cancer, autism, cerebral palsy and Alzheimer’s disease. ![]() Price does not include applicable sales tax, title fees, license fees, or reconditioning expenses.
